The title speaks for itself... though a side tournament is the only one reasonable aim as let's face it... no DBZ fighter will ever be worthy of being spoken on the same level as Tekken or Guilty Gear. Budokai 3 While the first two games were seen as stiff and clunky fighters, B3 won quite a few gamers over with it's vastly improved combat system to bring it closer to the action in the series. A simple yet deep combo system, a ki system that opens up a ton of potential strategic play, a variety of cool special moves in your disposal, and a bunch of advance tricks that only the really good players know about (notably guard cancelling). One thing holding it back is the annoying gimmicks (namely Dragon Rush) and some major balancing issues. Super Dragon Ball Z The first in the franchise to ever try to be a serious fighting game. Not as flashy as other DBZ games but it's still very familiar and it's not as alienating to the average fighting game enthusiast as the Budokai series or Budokai Tenkaichi series (which deviate from the formula) for it's combat is closer to it's fighting game roots. Not that many combo options but the characters themselves are very diverse and completely balanced, and positioning is the name of the game but in a 3D plane where the environment can be used to your advantage. Let's not forget the Action Meter allowed for some great strategical play. One thing holding it back is there aren't that many alternative strategics. Budokai Tenkaichi 3 Another fan favorite. Many would dismiss BT3 as a "button-masher" and "DBZ simulator" due to the lack of variety in combos but for whatever depth it may lack in the combo system it makes up for the sheer amount of movement and defensive maneuver options. Each character have a very distant playstyle as well as strength/weakness to be knowledgeable about. One thing holding it back is good amount of the characters feel unnecessary. Burst Limit This game uses the Shin Budokai fighting mechanics where combos were done with Rush attacks and Smash attacks rather than Punches and Kicks, only simplified. There is no multi-directional inputs for combo moves and most of the smash attacks are nullifiers but at the same time every character played completely different from each other. It's honestly the first DBZ game where I can safely every single character is unique. Special moves are now integral to characters and ultimates can be changed before a match. One thing holding it back is the ki system destroys the strategical element that the previous Budokai games had. Infinite World This game uses the Budokai 3 fighting engine combined with elements from Shin Budokai and Burst Limit. The combo system also lacks the multi-directional inputs (unless you have a fusion/potara capsule equipped) but like BL the combos for each character is completely different. Best part is that there's no Dragon Rush... but a few elements from SB and BL aren't implemented well such as the fatigue system (fills up too quickly) and several of the new special moves are easily exploitable. Also nullifiers are too predominant. Xenoverse XV is the Dimps' first attempt at a over-the-shoulder DBZ fighter. The combo system in this game is very simplistic as there's only 11 different strings and every character more or less have the same inputs but the combos themselves are very different. You also have a wide variety of special moves all with their own attributes and specific uses in battle. One problem with this game is the original character cast is very unbalanced and several mechanics are straight up broken. Xenoverse 2. It will hopefully be better than Xenoverse, and will prob fix some of the issues @ least. But if I had to choose from this list.... hard to say. Not one quite got everything right. It had to be implemenred from every game tbh. lol |

Probably IW. Budokai 3 and Burst limit is a Close 2nd Never played Super DBZ but it has some elements so it's a follow up They don't really put in 3D fighters in Majors (Only pokken but that was because it was very in a sense "Tekken Heavy" and had a lot of elements so it got an exeption), XV doesn't have the capabilities to be in even side events or even Locals in all honesty BT3 goes in the same box as XV only difference is its way more balanced, if any 3d dbz games deserves to be in a tourney it's RB2 |
