So I recently just okayed Republic commando and I have to say, this is one of the best openings I've seen in a game for setting the time of the story and game here. The game starts off with a speech, while mandalorian chants and music play in the background. You go through the life of a clone, being trained your whole life for war. The Kaminoan admittedly exposits allot, but the music helps to sell it into something truly epic especially when it climaxes into seeing the army of the republic, getting ready to head to Geonosis, mandalprian war chants finally coming into the forefront. Admittedly part of what's so interesting here is helped along by the fact that it's star wars and you know it's normally about the Jedi and the republic and the CIS and all that during this time. You barely hear about that, aside from the enemies you train for being CIS droids, and the republic vaguely mentioned as what you're defending. If the rest of the clones has similar upbringings, it completely explains how the empire's army and navy stayed after the entire republic was reformatted into an empire. Interestingly the Jedi aren't even mentioned here, keep in mind that Star Wars through out almost everything has had at least done relation to the Jedi, so this is a fair change of pace as well. Unlike Star Wars, it's not space fantasy, or a space opera, this is a war story, even the usual text crawl is replaced a few dark and somber words. I found this to be a really strong opening up a game, what about the rest of you? What fans have had incredibly strong openings for you? |

Star Wars has always been a war story. I mean, the word war is in the freaking title, lol Not only one but SEVERAL wars! But what do you mean by strong? Immersive? Interesting? Enjoyable? |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

Anything that grabs your attention and makes you want to play more. The more it works even after the beginning the better. Any of those can work really.
Even before I had any idea what MGS was I loved that opening. The whole dark speech about how war has changed, the music, and especially the reveal of the geckos, that became pretty big. |

I'd check out some of the Old Republics openings. They're animated beautifully. |

Typical choice I know but I think TLOU had a fantastic opening. Very well scripted series of events and it puts you right in the middle of the danger. Usually in a zombie apocalypse game you know a bit about what's going on or you're at least equipped to fight something(like Resident Evil) but in TLOU you're just as hopeless and confused as any random citizen would be. That part where you're in the car as the girl, you just can't help but look all around trying to figure out what's going on. Then when you get chased by the infected by the crashed ambulance and you can only hear it bearing down on you as it's shadow is cast in front showing it is right behind you. Easy to see why the game caught so much attention. Your introduction in to Columbia in BioShock Infinite is excellent too. Especially if you've played the other games with their murky and horrible underwater settings. But you soon find out Columbia isn't the paradise it would at first appear to be... |

The Dragon's Dogma opening/intro is my personal favorite. You can only play it once per character even though there's an infite loop of New Game+ mode. Edited by Helvius Pertinax Augustus, Sep 11 2016, 10:37 PM.

Off the top of my head: The Last of Us Uncharted 4, surprisingly Bioshock Infinite Far Cry 3 and 4 both had great intros It's hard for me to remember beginnings; I mostly just remember the end. |
