Does liberalism lead to social progression?

Crazy Awesome Legend

I was just thinking about my dad having stupid reasons for voting for The Conservative Party and then I got onto the line of thought that his dad was more right wing then he is, and his dad before him more so than that. So each generation obviously becomes more and more liberal minded. We can see this all around the world. Now given that the world is a more peaceful place today then ever before, more people are above the poverty line and people generally have a lot more civil rights, is it reasonable to link that social progression with liberal ideas?

I'm not trying to suggest that if the whole world went left wing then everything would turn out great. There's obviously plenty of leftist groups and ideas which are terrible. But generally it seems like a lot more progress gets made when people and their governments are to the left of centre.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Stupid liberal, everything should be harsh and anger fuelled.

In all seriousness though aside from some really really dumb stuff from the left I'm not sure why people are so against it, just grumbly old minded people who think every other country is some sort of enemy and that working towards a safe, friendly world where people get along is unnecessary.

I would guess it has a lot to do with the media, years ago you had no reason to give any f***s about supposed horrible conditions in somewhere like Syria but now with the advancement of media based technology people can see the struggles others face and sympathise with them a lot more, as opposed to just hearing about it in a newspaper.
Like that kid injured in a bombing or something that was on the news recently, that got a lot of people upset. "Child killed in bombing" wouldn't have the same effect as seeing the video of the poor little guy.

As well as social issues like views on homosexuality, people can better see that homosexuals and the like are human beings just like them.

Before everyone was in their own little box worrying about themselves and now we're all connected.

It depends on certain people. My contention that the Democrat party is going to split within itself into two separate parties: Progressive and Democrat. We've seen a teaser of this with the candidacy of Bernie Sanders. Jill Stein and the Green party is also affiliated with Progressive ideologies. I think your question is to vague to some degree, some Liberals are more moderately fiscal whereas others believe it is the right of the Government to pay for everything in the country through entitlements.

I'm not a fan of liberalism or it's policies, and I voted for Obama in 2008 but I left the Democrat party. I don't align with the Republican party either though. I'm fiscally conservative but lean left on social issues, so I guess a Moderate Republican or a Centralist. But back to your question. It is common for liberals to become progressives, just like it's common for republicans to become conservatives. Funny thing is, is that people usually think liberal/Democrat - Republican/conservative are the same thing, but they're not. Conservatives are closely to Constitutionists like liberals are closer to progressives/socialist leaning.

Steve is correct discussing the media. The liberal media is very powerful in today's world. Journalism is no longer impartial, it's rare finding an honest news agency, both left and right wing, left is just far more common and adamant and therefore increases chances of turning people more liberal, especially for the younger generation who don't understand a lot about the world and feel the government owes them something no matter what.

I think the two party system is doomed to fail in the near future. You will first see it with the Progressive Party separating from Democrats. So yes, Democrats to become more liberal over time, but it's not like it's automatic. Everyone is different, but the Progressive agenda is become quite strong in the world today. Bernie Sanders ignited a flame.

Ok I need to shut up because I'm getting way to off topic. Sorry.

I understand the original question but I think it may be a little backwards in thinking. Liberalism doesn't neccessarily lead to social progression as much as the inverse: Social progression leads to liberalism. My biggest piece of evidence to this is Lyndon B. Johnson.

Nobody who knows the name would neccessarily call him liberal. Chances are the man himself considered it a dirty word and would smack you for implying he was one at the best of times. But all that to the side, Johnson aided the Civil Rights movement far more than it ever had before, and indeed was definitely part of the reason it succeeded.

The success of the Civil Rights movement was itself an example of Social Progression. What happened after (Gay rights movemenf, Migrant Workers uniting, Women's Liberation) were all liberal ideas spawned from a single social progression. Thereby I always felt that Social Progression begat the liberalism that drove it further on.
