This is something I'm doing on here just to assess truly which 8 bit console is superior. The Sega Master System or the Nintendo Entertainment System. Lets start with the thing most people jump to first. Graphics. Which console generally supported better graphics on its games? First lets look at the hardware specs for each console's graphical capabilities. Nintendo: Video RAM: 2KB Colors On Screen: 16 (four 4-colour background palettes plus four 4-colour sprite palettes) Color Palette: 52 Sprite Max & Size: 64 at 8x8 and 8x16 Sprites per Scanline: 8 Master System: Video RAM: 16KB Color RAM: 32 bytes Colors On Screen: 32 (two 16-colour palettes) Color Palette: 64 Sprite Max & Size: 64 at 8x8, 8x16, 16x16, 16x32 Sprites per Scanline: 8 On paper Master System wins handily here. But lets look at some screen caps to confirm. Double Dragon for Master System ![]() Double Dragon for NES. ![]() Ninja Gaiden for Master System ![]() Ninja Gaiden for the NES. ![]() So I think those four screen caps support the idea that Master System at least looks nicer visually. But how about sound quality? Well the Master System has four audio channels and the NES has five. So that basically answers that question. Despite lagging behind here, I still enjoy the Master System's tinny sound. It adds to it's character in my opinion. Okay now the meat and potatoes. Games. Both machines sported some terrific games. However which console generally did it better overall? The NES certainly had a more recognisable library. Super Maro Bros 1-3 Metroid The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II Ice Climbers Kirby's Adventure Fire Emblem Final Fantasy 1-3 Dragon Quest 1-4 Kid Icarus Castlevania Mike Tyson's Punch out Compared with the Master Systems top exclusive titles Phantasy Star Alex Kidd 1-4 Sonic The Hedgehog The Illusion franchise Golden Axe Warrior Wonder Boy franchise Psycho Fox R-Type Master of Darkness So NES has it beat on sheer numbers and overall game quality. What can we take from this? Well if you want more variety and aren't fussy about how the games look then The Nintendo wins. If you want to try some more obscure yet interesting and better looking games then The Master System takes it. So I call it a draw. But I know which I prefer ![]() Edited by Pelador, Sep 1 2016, 01:19 AM.
