I was just thinking that in nature, human teeth don't grow in straight orderly lines. We usually get over bites and gaps between them. So if that is how they are meant to grow, aren't we making a mistake by "correcting" them? I'm not saying we should just forget about seeing a dentist, rather perhaps we should worry less about cosmetic adjustments. Teeth aren't white and teeth aren't straight and I think there might be a reason for this. |

What will you do when you get old?

They're simply that, cosmetic adjustments. Just like plastic surgery, they're not done for any real purpose. With teeth though, they can grow improperly and cause the person a lot of pain, and in that case I understand getting your teeth aligned "properly". |

But does altering your teeth cosmetically affect chewing, digestion, or even how they will grow several generations later due to evolution? |

It just makes you look better, that's the only reason for it. If/When/(I have)/ my kids and they needed braces I would get it for them the same way I'd get them a comb. |

I frequently wonder about how our teeth work. We only get 2 or 3 sets and they're so damn fragile, of course modern humans consume way more sugar than our primitive ancestors but...surely their teeth would still rot away with eating fruits? What even is the natural way to keep them clean? Our physiology seems to depend on us having figured out a way to stop our teeth rotting away. Though I guess we could chew our hair or something? Rubbing your fingers on them only does so much. Can you imagine how useless we'd be as a species if we weren't smart?

If my teeth didn't get aligned, then I would have ground them down to mere stumps and be in extreme pain. There is more to it than cosmetic need. @Steve Humans would only live about 40 or so years at best, you don't need that many teeth when you die young and live fast. |

Mine are slightly out of alignment and one is slightly crooked but it is hardly noticeable. I have a great smile. They should be straight, if possible. Though genetic defects are unavoidable. |

There are definitely valid health reasons for straightening teeth. Crooked teeth are more susceptible to food getting stuck in between them, and harder to clean, and they can grow in awkward positions that can cause discomfort or pain. I wouldn't say they 'should' be straight (or at least, not flawlessly straight), but the straighter the better. White teeth are purely cosmetic though. Pretty sure I've read somewhere that teeth are naturally slightly yellow anyway, so not being white doesn't necessarily equate to unhealthiness. Obviously ideally they won't be very yellow, or other colours, but I don't think they need or should be bright white for anything other than cosmetic reasons. |

My teeth are naturally straight. In fact, both my dentist and the hygienist asked if I wore braces in my life. When I responded no they both were shocked. The only thing I was worried about was if I had a cavity and I didn't! So that was a good dentist visit. Now my teeth aren't 100 percent white though, as they are slightly yellow. I guess they are whiter than average though. |
