Crazy Awesome Legend

I was just wandering how legendary managers like Alex Ferguson or Brian Clough would do if they had to manage a team in the 8-6th tier. Where they so good that they could get anyone promoted? Or would even they struggle with little to no finances?

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I think Brian Clough would definitely have fared well in the lowest leagues. The beginning of his career was spent fairly low anyway (old fourth division) with Huddersfield, and he was successful in turning them from a bottom of the barrel team to an upper table finish. Plus, the football back then probably wasn't as high a standard as it is today, so his players there were probably not much better, if at all, than the 5th/6th/7th tier today. He also took both Derby and Nottingham Forest from the second division up to the top division too, so he didn't start at a top club in either of those cases.

Not sure about Ferguson. He wasn't immediately successful with United, and they were a big club before he arrived, so it's harder to say how he would have fared starting lower down the rungs. He also benefited wildly from success at the right time, since Man Utd were the successful team when Sky money first arrived, aiding them in staying on top (not the only reason, but it definitely helped). Maybe it he had a few years to cultivate the right atmosphere and had good youth players, but I'm not sure that's possible at a lower club.

Managers like Mourinho and Guardiola definitely wouldn't. Both have never really been anywhere without major financial backing, and Guardiola especially wouldn't really be able to recreate his football at a lower league team.

I think its quite unfair to punish managers like Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho for consistently coaching bigger clubs with more resources available to them. They are still exceptional managers who, when looking at results and trophies, prove to be better than most other managers in modern football. After all, Barcelona went trophyless the year before Guardiola took over. As for Mourinho, Manchester United had all the resources and money in the world before he came, but Mourinho has taken a pretty poor squad and turned it into a ridiculously good squad while improving team performance tremendously. His track record is proven at every level, from Porto to Chelsea to Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

While I'm not saying Guardiola and Mourinho would be able to take a lower tier team and become successful, I also don't see any reason to expect the same from older managers such as Sir Alex Ferguson. A manager and tactics can only have so much influence on a team, you can't win without great players and it's extremely difficult to build a title winning team without spending money on finished products.

And before mentioning Leicester City, everyone and their grandmothers know that what happened to Leicester City is probably never going to happen again, and they already look far off the level they played at last year.
