Conspiracy theories

Most people don't believe in them, but do we keep bringing them back in our daily life like in video games, TV shows, books, talk show topics?

Regarding books, the answer is quite obvious, looks who's profiting from the sales and evaluate from there. What about video games, tv shows, movies, talk shows?

Example:

Games - MGS uses PMC.
Tv show - Prison break uses the Company.
Talk show or pod cast uses the NWO or Zionists.

Is there any in common or are there all delusional?

Reopened this one.

The rule on conspiracy theories is more to do with discussing the validity of conspiracy theories - which I do not want to see happen here.

This thread is entirely for the discussion of the use of them in popular culture etc.

So consider this a test of if we can have a sensible discussion on this matter.

oh cool so my innocuous post in the hillary thread was perfectly fine neat

I think conspiracy theories are just what happens when ideas like epicycles hit a critical mass of exaggeration and lack of verificaiton

which is really interesting because of how it seems like there's always a scoop, so the crux of their sustainability is how entertaining they are like you say
personally ufo stuff is really interesting but we'll never know, which is the fun part -- they're fun to think about

They are fun to think about but, some people tend to let the thought consume them. What ifs aren't really a good thing to get caught up on.

What does everyone think about the idea of Prince Philip being behind Princess Diana's death?

I explicitly said not to discuss this here...

Final warning before I close this down again.

Conspiracy theories are used in popular culture snot because they make for a very compelling story, having to peel back the layers of dishonesty and less to uncover a dastardly plot and so forth.

And mostly related, I think allot of people cling to these theories, at least in the case of say 9/11, I think it has allot to do for a search of meaning in disasters, when you look at the lead up it seems so obvious and like a s*** show that no one stopped it. As one person put it, it's easier to believe the powerful government did it than to think that two schmucks with box cutters could hijack a couple planes and cause one of the most traumatizing events in American history. Same applies to books, even more so that you have to entertain am audience, unless you're deliberately trying to subvert something or talk any terrorism, you need to look for a deeper reason than that seeming randomness. There needs to be a plot and a string of events and something to fight against and so on.

What will you do when you get old?

I think a prime example of an existing conspiracy theory is The Berenstain Bears/Berenstein Bears books. Everyone remembers it being Berenstein, but all the books are Berenstain.

Anyway conspiracy theories are a way to explain things that to the individual creating the theory have no other rational way of explaining the event(s) that have happened or are projected to happen. It is kind of hard to buy the major news outlets take on things, considering they're all given narratives by the government, and a few of them have won lawsuits allowing them to continue lying to their viewers (I'm looking at you, Fox news and CNN).

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

People also seem to like 'twists'. Movie twists generally get positive reactions from viewers, so it makes sense that people would look for twists in real life events. Sticking with the movie/TV show analogy, people also seem to like trying to figure out the plot themselves before it happens, so again, makes sense that people would like to figure out a conspiracy theory themselves and be 'right' when everyone else was wrong.

I kind of agree with you, I'm asking because i have MSg4 bluray special features, Hideo Kojima said he did research which led him to using the PMC in his games.

This sums it up nicely. Humans by nature are inquisitive. We always seek questions to the what ifs of life. If we can question the validity of the government and it's actions regarding 9/11, as example, this opens a door of inquisition that we as humans thrive to understand. It is in our blood to ask questions, which is how we have transcended technologically over the years.

I'm going to ask a question, and if it's against the rules you can just delete my post. I don't want to get this thread closed down, but I also don't want to remain ignorant.

Why is the discussion of conspiracy theories prohibited on this forum? I've never heard of that being a rule, and it seems a bit like you're cracking down on freedom of speech and open discussion with this one. Then again, I really don't know much about conspiracy theories, nor do I particularly enjoy discussing them. Does it have to do with members getting too heated and ridiculous when it comes to conspiracy theories, or it some personal vendetta against the idea of them?

Again, totally disregard and delete this post if I've crossed the line or something.
