Crazy Awesome Legend

This woman from The Labour Party sent me this e-mail earlier. We are all now receiving ballot papers giving us a vote for who will lead our great Labour party. This is a vital decision for all of us and we will all make our own choice but as many members have asked what my position is I wanted to share with you how I will be voting and why. It is a choice I have given a great deal of thought to and I'm sure you will do the same. The Labour party was created so we could win power to deliver change. Since then when we’ve been in government we’ve delivered that change – we created and invested in the NHS, brought in employment rights and the National Minimum Wage, protected our environment and much, much more. When we aren’t in government we see the things we value being dismantled and destroyed. Because I believe the UK needs a Labour government I am supporting Owen Smith in this election. We have to win the seats in the South West that we failed to win in 2015 and keep the ones that we did win – and we could have to win them in the coming year if Theresa May calls an early election. Sadly all the evidence shows that we are going backwards since the last general election. Despite high profile and happy successes in May this year we had a net loss of council seats across the country, unheard of for a party in opposition since the early 80’s, and we came third in Scotland behind the Tories. The referendum and its aftermath have also been very important factors in making my choice. Jeremy did not provide the leadership that Labour and the British public needed so badly in the referendum campaign. The public were unsure of the party’s and Jeremy’s position on the referendum even in the last week of the campaign. After the referendum Jeremy also demonstrated a failure of political judgement in calling immediately for Article 50 to be invoked, which would have been a disaster. Owen Smith has been clear and consistent on the need to challenge the government all the way through the Brexit process. Jeremy has failed to articulate any sense of direction on this throughout the leadership campaign so far, leaving a gaping hole at the heart of the political issue that is going to dominate public debate, our economy and Parliament’s business for months and probably years to come. We are facing a really tough political environment, whether on our future relationship with the EU, effectively opposing the Tories or developing a credible plan for investment in our economy and our public services in the future. I believe Owen Smith gives Labour the best chance to unite the party and to take on the Tories and win. That is why I’m supporting Owen Smith in this contest and I hope you will consider using your vote to support him to. Best wishes, Clare Ps – for more detail on Owen Smith’s leadership manifesto see his website www.owen2016.com These are the personal views of Clare Moody MEP To which I replied We are all now receiving ballot papers giving us a vote for who will lead our great Labour party. It is a choice I have given a great deal of thought to and I'm sure you will do the same. We? Who’s we? Because as I’m sure you know all too well, many members who registered after the 12th of January 2016 cannot vote for anyone. We’re barred from voting unless we pay a disgusting £25. A decision for all of us indeed. Perhaps you or whoever else came up with this e-mail template should go back and revise the message? Because it feels a little bit like the fact I have no say in this decision, despite being a full member of The Labour Party is being rubbed in my face. This policy put in place by the NEC is almost enough to make me think twice about my membership and I sincerely hope it gets fixed before too long. It truly is a slap in the face of democracy in this country that an executive committee such as this, can control the voters in this way. So no actually, I will not be doing the same because I can’t. It annoyed me that the e-mail seemed to assume everyone could vote when they know full well how many aren't allowed. I honestly felt like telling her to straight fuck off but that would probably damage my political career. |
